Who Am I?

A musicianship teacher since 2004, piano teacher in Northwood since 2010;  my specialism is in teaching beginners to intermediate level all ages from 4 years through to Adult.   Not one for enjoying boredom, my lessons are creative, games orientated but drenched in strong foundation skills.

I am also fully versed with the South Herts Consortium Secondary Transfer Music tests and have been thoroughly preparing students for the music aptitude test since 2010.  The students do not have to be my piano students to come to me for Aural.

I am trained in Kodály and Dalcroze techniques plus how to teach in a fun but effective way by The DaCapo Music Foundation and have worked for DaCapo at their flagship Family Music Centre, in London, since 2007.   I continue professional development with DaCapo but also via the web with memberships with International piano pedagogues such as Tim Topham and Nicola Cantan as there is always more to learn about how to teach effectively.  I also research anything that crops up in my teaching whether it's issues with Neurodiversity or the latest repertoire for Halloween!

DaCapo put musicianship at the heart of all their teaching.  Head to their website to find out more...

DaCapo means to go back to the beginning and there is no doubt that involving your child in musicianship as soon as possible is the most effective way to build skills such as singing in tune, keeping a steady beat, understanding strong and weak beats - all vital for playing an instrument.  For this reason, I created my own Northwood toddler music group back in 2003/4 which progressed to a Reception age class and teaching Early Years and Reception at DaCapo in London and then a Year 2 after school club for 10 years at Eastbury Farm Primary School.

I now focus mainly on 1:1 piano teaching both in Northwood and at DaCapo and have continued teaching throughout the Covid 19 pandemic online and in-person when allowed.

Positive points resulting from the pandemic are that I'm more tech literate!  I know what Zoom settings are needed to hear a piano successfully and even if you're online you can still play relevant music/piano games.

On the performance side, I have been a member of Blag Theatre Company since 1999.  In the past we toured the South East in between teaching and bringing up families, performing a unique musical parody show.  We now perform every Christmas (Covid allowing) at the Pump House Theatre, Watford.  A review of the year with Christmas at it's heart plus interactive (non-pressured) games with the audience.... more like a musical comedy party really...
