Metronomes were wind up ticking devices originally.   They exist to help musicians keep to the beat when practising so that they don't rush in their playing or get slower without knowing it.  Nowadays it's all on an app!  Classic Metronomes are simple repetitive noises such as clicks.  If you want a bit more fun to keep time to - try a drum beat!

There are tonnes of metronome apps varying from free versions to expensive pro versions.

Some suggestions are below available from the App store

As a beginner - my advice would be to go for the "Pulse" Metronome app to start off with and then think about the others later on!

Simple Metronomes no drums:

"Pulse - Metronome & Tap Tempo" - free, simple visual but no Italian terms

The Metronome by Soundbrenner:  free - in-app purchases:  easy to use - no drum sounds just clicks

Metronome+ : the old version was super easy to use and had a clear visual and I could put up with the advert strapline at the bottom but the new version isn't so nice on the eyes and the app constantly asks you to upgrade to the pro version which would cost £4.50 (as at August 2021)

Metronomes and Drum beat sounds

NB you can type into Youtube - drum beat crotchet = 60 and have a running recording (free) of exactly that.

Supermetronome Groove Box: There is a lite version which is free so useful to try out with and a paid version £5.99 (August 2021).  This is a metronome and drum beat machine which you can choose the sounds that play on which beats. Takes a little bit of playing around with to get used to it.  Unfortunately, the Lite version only has 16 bars worth before it turns itself off.

Drum beats by ninebuzz:  This has all the drum beats set up for you so you just have to scroll through to find what you want.  You can change the time signature.  You will need to play around with it to find something suitable but you can save your "favourites" in one place to find them again easily.  It does cost £12.99 though.
